Mozilla Unblocks Microsoft Add-On For Firefox

Mozilla blocked the Framework Assistant last Friday. Earlier in the week, Microsoft warned that Firefox users were vulnerable to an attack because of a problem in the add-on if users had not applied the MS09-054 IE patch. Mozilla consulted Microsoft before implementing the block.

Still blocked is the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) add-on, but Mozilla is working on an alternative for users.

“We’re hard at work on improving the experience for (especially enterprise) users who wish to override the blocking of the WPF plugin before we remove it from the blocklist, and I’m working on a post to clarify the events of the past few days,” Shaver wrote. “We (especially I) appreciate your patience and support as we work to keep our users safe and comfortable with all the tools at our disposal.”

Firfox Update Fixes Critical Flaws

Firefox users, get ready for the Update Available pop-up: New versions for the 3.0 and 3.5 browser lines that fix critical security holes are now available.

One serious bug in the “BrowserFeedWriter” could be hit with malicious Javascript code to run an attacker’s command with elevated privileges. A second critical TreeColumns dangling pointer vulnerability, along with a third set of critical issues in the browser engine, could allow a bad guy to crash Firefox and run “arbitrary code,” which might be to install malware, on a vulnerable computer.

Both updates also fix a low-priority flaw in the Location bar that could be used to hide a URL by using certain Unicode characters, and 3.0.14 patches up a moderate hole involving PKCS11 modules that could “affect the cryptographic integrity” of a vulnerable browser.

State Department Asks Hillary Clinton for Firefox

In a town hall meeting yesterday, a new member of the State Department, which uses Internet Explorer as its Web browser, pleaded with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to “please let the staff use” rival Mozilla Firefox. (Jump to 26:34 on the above video.) Pointing out that Firefox had been “approved for the entire intelligence community,” and that it’s a “much safer program,” the rookie’s question was met with a rowdy chorus of cheers and laughter.

While the exchange may seem like just another instance of politicians being oblivious to a changing world, at least no one muttered anything about tubes, the Internets, or Web site numbers.

Mozilla Already Working on Firefox 3.1. To Be Ready by Year’s End.

The official release of Firefox 3 may be slated to drop on Tuesday, but the folks at Mozilla have already started drafting features for Firfox 3.1, like a Windows Alt-Tab-style for the Ctrl-Tab switcher.

Firefox 3.1 would be targeted for this year’s to intentionally coincide with Firefox Mobile (Fennec) development and release, making it the fastest update in Firefox history. It usually takes about a year between releases.

Some new CSS features in Firfox 3

Many people contributed to the work involved in adding these new features and the many other new CSS features in Firefox 3. The work in rewriting our graphics architecture was particularly important, and led to a number of these new features (and should lead to more new features in future firfox download). These contributions include a lot more than just writing code.

I’d like to thank everybody who filed bug reports, analyzed bugs and wrote test cases, fixed them, and documented the new features for their contributions to the features that I described above and the architecture work that they depend on, and to getting all of that work into a state that we can be proud of shipping as Firefox 3.

Walter S. Mossberg: Firfox 3.0 Voted Best Browser for Web — for Now

The new version will be released simultaneously for Windows and the Mac’s OS X operating system, as well as for Linux. While each of the three editions will have the visual style of the operating system on which it runs, all three will have the same features.

My verdict is that Firefox 3.0 is the best Web browser out there right now, and that it tops the current versions of both IE and Safari in features, speed and security. It is easy to install and easy to use, even for a mainstream, non-technical user. It can be downloaded, free, on their Web site by clicking on “Firefox 3 Sneak Peek.”

This situation may change. Microsoft is working on a new version of IE, scheduled to be introduced later this year, with some impressive new features. And Apple is always working on new iterations of Safari, though it is secretive and hasn’t disclosed its plans. But for now, in my view, Firfox 3.0 download rules on both Windows and Mac.

Firefox 3 Download Release Candidate 2. Get It Now

The programmers and development teams at Mozilla are working hard to get things flawless with the Firfox 3 browser. To reach their lofty goals they are releasing yet another release candidate. Dubbed Firfox 3 RC2, it has a few fixes from the first release candidate. Unlike the first release which might have had some very unstable features still, the RC2 is definitely a stable browser to test out and a reliable Firfox download.

Firefox 3 – the final release – is due later this month. But definitely check out the new Release Candidate if you’re the cutting edge type. As always, it’s a free download and meant for people that understand there will be bugs and glitches before the final release.

Firfox on track to crack 20% market share in July

Firefox boosted its share by 0.6% in May, accounting for 18.4% of the browsers used during the month and putting it within shouting distance of a major milestone, according to Net Applications Inc. “Firefox is trending to hit 20% market share sometime in July,” said Vince Vizzaccaro, the company’s executive vice president of marketing, in an e-mail regarding the Firfox Download.

Although Vizzaccaro didn’t pin all of Firefox’s increase on a change last month to its update dialog, he did note the new approach. “Mozilla has implemented a change in Firefox 3.0 [Release Candidate 1] where the installation now has a checkbox that defaults to making Firfox your default browser,” he explained.
